One workshop from impression to delivery

Gizem Protez Göz Merkezi has been making prosthetic eyes in Osmangazi since 1987. Impression, painting, fitting and delivery happen in one place, by the same hands.

  • Painted by looking at the other eye

Iris and sclera are painted in natural light while looking at your other eye.

  • Working with your ophthalmologist

Surgery and medical follow-up stay with your doctor; making and fitting the prosthesis is ours.

  • Planning for visitors from afar

We plan the stages with you by phone to keep the number of trips low.

Six steps from impression to delivery

Every prosthesis follows the same path, yet no two are alike. The time it takes depends on the condition of the eye socket and the type of prosthesis; it becomes clear at the first visit.

How a prosthetic eye is made
  1. 1

    First consultation

You book an appointment by phone or WhatsApp. Bring your ophthalmologist's report or recommendation if you have one. When the prosthesis can be fitted is decided by the ophthalmologist following your healing.

  2. 2

    Impression

An impression of the eye socket is taken with a special mould. The shape of the prosthesis comes from this impression, so the eyelid closes naturally and the prosthesis stays in place.

  3. 3

    Painting

The iris and the white of the eye are hand-painted while looking at your other eye. The shade, the iris pattern and the fine vessels of the sclera are matched one by one.

  4. 4

    Fitting

The prosthesis is placed to check how it sits, the direction of gaze and the movement of the eyelid. Any adjustments are made at this stage.

  5. 5

    Delivery

The prosthesis is finished and polished. Inserting, removing and cleaning it are shown to you hands-on.

  6. 6

    Check-ups

Regular check-ups and polishing keep the prosthesis comfortable and glossy. Because the eye socket can change over time, the prosthesis may need to be renewed.

Eye removal surgery (enucleation or evisceration) and implant placement are performed by an ophthalmologist. Our workshop makes and fits the prosthesis.

Frequently asked questions

What is a prosthetic eye?

A prosthetic eye is an artificial eye, custom-measured and painted, for people who have lost an eye or whose eye has lost its function. It is usually made of medical acrylic.

Does a prosthetic eye restore sight?

No. A prosthetic eye does not provide vision. Its purpose is to preserve the natural appearance of the face and the shape of the eye socket.

Does a prosthetic eye move?

If an orbital implant sphere was placed during surgery, the prosthesis carries part of that implant's movement. The amount varies from person to person; without an implant, movement is more limited.

How long after surgery is the prosthesis fitted?

Your ophthalmologist, who follows your healing, makes this decision. During this period a conformer is usually worn to keep the shape of the eye socket.

How is a prosthetic eye made?

First an impression of the eye socket is taken and the shape of the prosthesis is made from it. Then the iris and sclera are hand-painted while looking at the other eye, a fitting is done, and the prosthesis is polished and delivered.

When should a prosthetic eye be renewed?

It depends on changes in the eye socket and the condition of the prosthesis. Surface and fit are assessed at regular check-ups and renewal is recommended when needed. Children need more frequent replacement as they grow.
