Custom prosthetic eyes
A prosthetic eye is a custom-made artificial eye used by people who have lost an eye, or whose eye has lost its function, to preserve the appearance of the face and the shape of the eye socket. It does not restore sight; its purpose is a natural look and comfortable wear.
Appointments and information
Who it is for
People whose eye has been surgically removed (enucleation, evisceration), people born with a small or undeveloped eye, and other cases where an ophthalmologist recommends a prosthesis. Assessment before the prosthesis and surgical follow-up are done by your ophthalmologist.
Material
Our prostheses are made of medical acrylic. Acrylic is light and durable, its surface can be renewed by polishing and its fit can be adjusted when needed.
Moving prosthetic eye
If an orbital implant sphere was placed in the eye socket during surgery, the prosthesis is designed to sit over that implant and carries part of the eye muscles' movement. The amount of movement varies from person to person.
Colour and texture
Iris colour, pattern, pupil size and the shade of the sclera are set according to your other eye. Painting is done while comparing in natural light.
For children
As a child's eye socket grows, the prosthesis and the conformer need to be enlarged. We plan the follow-up schedule together with your ophthalmologist.
